Back in 2016, I mined some ETH on my own rig and later sold them off for about $11.29 (RM50) each.
Later on, I just setup my FB page and start selling some ETH miner rigs when ETH started to peak during July 2017, where 1 ETH = $224.03 USD as shown below.
At that time, it felt like a small win. Looking back today, in Aug 2025, with 1 ETH trading close to RM20,000, it’s a reminder of how early those days really were.
In September 2021, I decided to buy a some ETH at the price tag of around $4,541 then, and I let it sit. Of course, it wasn’t a smooth ride. In Jan 2022, ETH crashed all the way down to around $1,060.
At the time, that would have turned my position into a big loss if I sold. Towards the April 2025, ETH also dipped again to around $1,567, testing my patience. But I chose to HODL, and that decision paid off.
Fast forward almost 5 years later, on 23 August 2025, I finally closed that trade when ETH was at $4,749.
The result? A modest $11.45 profit (around RM50). Not exactly moon money, but it felt special because it represented patience, hodling, and surviving all the ups and downs of the crypto market.
To mark the moment, I headed to Don Omakase in TTDI, one of the go-to spots for Japanese affordable omakase fine dining in KL. And here’s the cool part where I paid with my Cypher Card, straight from my crypto balance.
🍣 ETH to Omakase
Instead of cashing out to my bank, I simply top up Cypher Card with my Metamask ETH remaining balance. Years of hodling ETH turned into fresh sashimi and a night to remember, just like the Bitcoin guy who sold 10,000 BTC for 2 pieces of pizza. Sitting at the counter, watching the chef prepare each course, it really hit me for this crypto funded this experience.
Besides, I also ordered the 10 Ocean Don, which consists of Uni, Engawa, Hamachi, Salmon, Ama Ebi, Nama Hotate, Tsubugai, Hokkigai, Yuzu Ikura, and Avruga Caviar, priced at RM65. Taste-wise, I think the rice is the same as the RM15 Salmon Dice Don mini, but the seafood is more premium.

The final bill cost RM100.10 and I pay with Cypher crypto card which cost around $24.16.

From mining ETH in 2016, to buying again in 2021, surviving the 2022 and facing 2025 crash, finally tasting premium Japanese food in 2025, this journey showed me that crypto isn’t just numbers on a chart it’s something that can be part of everyday life.
