Recently, I came across a Facebook ad offering cheap one-way flights from Penang Airport to Hong Kong International Airport via HK Express, with prices starting from RM224 to RM253+.
As usual, the comments section was flooded with complaints:
Yes, low-cost airline pricing can be confusing, especially with all the baggage and fee add-ons. Instead of booking directly from the HK Express website, I used Trip.com, where the price was much clearer and bundled properly. It saved me time and frustration.
This wasn’t just a Web3 payment. It was also a Web3-funded trip.
I’ve been farming Binance Alpha Points consistently to qualify for airdrops from Binance Alpha. From the airdrop rewards, I received AVAIL coins and quickly sold them for USDT:
💰 2667 AVAIL → 72.30 USDT
I then loaded that USDT into my Virtual Cypher card and paid for the flight. This wasn’t fiat I converted. It was entirely funded by Binance Alpha Point airdrop.

I booked the flight on Trip.com and paid using my Cypher virtual Visa card.
🎫 Total Paid: RM263
💼 Included: 20kg checked baggage
💳 Charged to Cypher: USD $63.50
📈 Rate: Based on Visa’s live USD-MYR conversion
Trip.com clearly showed which packages included baggage, so I didn’t have to figure out complicated fare breakdowns like on the airline’s site.
Here’s what I noticed on HK Express directly:
Baggage Option | Price |
---|---|
Personal item + 7kg cabin only | RM301 |
Checked baggage (1 x 20kg) | RM483 |
That’s a RM182 difference or about a 60% increase just by picking the wrong add-on. With the RM263 all-in price I got on Trip.com, everything was sorted from the start.
This was my first time flying HK Express and here’s my honest review:
When I reached Penang International Airport, I received my boarding pass at the counter, along with a small cabin baggage tag for my hand-carry item. The check-in process was smooth, and everything was clearly labeled.
Once onboard, I noticed that in-flight food and drinks were available for purchase, with meals starting from around 30 HKD and drinks from 20 HKD. Since my flight was at midnight, I didn’t order anything, but the menu looked decent for a budget airline.
The plane departed on time and arrived on schedule at Hong Kong International Airport. After landing, I went straight to Baggage Claim Counter 15 to pick up my checked-in luggage, which was delivered promptly without any hassle.
✈️ Boarding: Smooth and on time
🧳 Check-In: No baggage issues
🍱 In-flight Meal: Not included (as expected)
🪑 Seats: Basic but clean
👨✈️ Crew: Friendly and professional
It was exactly what I expected from a budget airline. No surprises, no complaints.
This trip wasn’t just about spending crypto. It was about earning it through Web3 and spending it directly in the real world.
